CASCADE joins LUGA 2025

biochar for a sustainable future

Luxembourg will host LUGA – Luxembourg Urban Garden from 7 May to 18 October 2025. This open-air exhibition combines nature, sustainability and innovation. It will take place in five locations in Luxembourg City and in the Nordstad district of Ettelbrück. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore paths, gardens and interactive exhibitions that connect urban life with nature. Under the motto ‘Making the Invisible Visible’, LUGA highlights hidden ecological processes and the potential of greener cities.

CDEC at LUGA: showcasing biochar innovation

As part of the CASCADE project, the Council for the Economic Development of Construction (CDEC) will present an engaging stand at LUGA that focuses on biochar made from organic waste. The stand will offer visitors a hands-on introduction to:

  • the biomass needed to produce biochar
  • the pyrolysis process and its role in the production of biochar
  • the different types of biochar and their possible applications.

Through demonstrations and exhibits, visitors can explore how biochar functions as an alternative to traditional coal, offering environmental and economic benefits.
The stand will highlight the partnership between CDEC and Interreg and showcase the innovative results of the CASCADE project.

Planned highlights at the stand

CDEC will display a variety of biochar applications, including:

  • Biochar-enriched flower pots made from biochar concrete.
  • Asphalt samples mixed with biochar from pilot projects.
  • A green roof that uses biochar as a substrate to improve water retention and reduce environmental impact.

Visitors will see and interact with biochar-based products, and gain insights into their role in creating sustainable urban spaces. If you have samples or ideas to contribute to the stand, CDEC welcomes your collaboration!
