How Networking Sparks Biochar Innovation
The power of collaboration is a driving force in the biochar sector, where shared ideas and partnerships shape the future of sustainable carbon management. The CASCADE project, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, THREE C, continues to foster connections that lead to real-world impact. One such example is BioFlux, a company that found its inspiration within the European biochar network.#
A Journey Rooted in Collaboration
The founding team of BioFlux first crossed paths in 2015, brought together by a shared passion for climate action and sustainable innovation. Although initially following different professional paths—one focusing on rural sustainability, the other on urban development—their mutual interest in biochar brought them back together. Their turning point came in 2021 when they joined the Brussels-based StartLab incubator, seeking to explore biochar’s potential.
During this time, they connected with experts, farmers, and biochar producers, eventually joining the INTERREG THREE C project. This project, which laid the groundwork for CASCADE, demonstrated how biochar could be integrated into circular carbon economies across Europe. Inspired by the opportunities and innovations within THREE C, BioFlux began supporting biochar producers in setting up facilities, certifying biochar for different applications, and developing projects for smallholder farmers.
Scaling Up Biochar for Climate Action
Today, BioFlux is actively working to expand biochar production as a market-ready and scalable carbon removal solution. By turning organic waste into stable carbon storage, biochar has the potential to lock away CO₂ for centuries while improving soil health, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers, and even enhancing infrastructure materials. The work of BioFlux reflects the growing momentum within the European biochar network—where connections forged in projects like THREE C and CASCADE continue to drive practical, high-impact climate solutions.
CASCADE: A Platform for Growing the Biochar Network
The CASCADE project builds on the strong foundations established by THREE C, demonstrating how transnational cooperation can lead to tangible progress. By bringing together municipalities, researchers, businesses, and policymakers, CASCADE ensures that innovations in biochar continue to spread across Europe. Whether it’s new applications in agriculture, construction, or water management, the project fosters an environment where knowledge sharing leads to real, scalable solutions.
