CASCADE at the NWE Annual Event

... sharing progress and exploring opportunities

On 5-6 November 2024, the CASCADE project participated in the ‘Ready, Get Set, Cooperate!’ event at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. Organised by Interreg North-West Europe (NWE), the event brought together a range of projects, stakeholders and policymakers to discuss sustainable solutions, opportunities for cooperation and the future of the Interreg programme.

CASCADE’s biochar solutions showcased at the CASCADE stand

The CASCADE team proudly presented the project’s progress at its own stand in the exhibition area. With the support of all project partners, the stand showcased several examples of CASCADE’s work in developing circular carbon management systems:

  • Ecofalt: a sustainable asphalt alternative that is enriched with biochar to reduce CO2 emissions in road construction.
  • Seed coating: demonstrates how biochar-coated seeds can improve germination and support sustainable agriculture.
  • Cultural heritage: we presented the use of biochar-based coal to power a historic steam locomotive that combines sustainability with cultural heritage preservation.
  • Enhanced 3D printing: we presented a prototype of biochar-infused concrete that offers improved durability and a reduced carbon footprint in construction.

Visitors to the stand were able to explore these examples in miniature and view samples of biochar produced as part of the project. Information materials such as flyers, newsletters and a looped project video provided further insights into the aims and results of CASCADE

Networking and engagement

The NWE Annual Event provided a valuable platform for the CASCADE team to engage with other project representatives, stakeholders and policymakers. Discussions focused on practical applications of biochar, such as its role in carbon sequestration and its integration into industries such as agriculture and infrastructure.

There was considerable interest in the work of CASCADE, with visitors asking about the transferability of pilot actions in other regions. These exchanges highlighted the growing recognition of biochar as a versatile tool for addressing climate challenges.

Interreg topics and the role of CASCADE

The event emphasised the importance of transnational cooperation in tackling climate issues and managing resources effectively. CASCADE’s mission to develop transferable carbon management systems is closely aligned with these themes. By focusing on biochar technologies, the project not only addresses carbon reduction but also promotes sustainable practices in urban, peri-urban and rural areas.

Reflections and next steps

Participation in the NWE Annual Event provided the CASCADE project with a platform to share its results and engage with a wider audience. The event also provided an opportunity to explore potential partnerships, prepare for future funding calls and get feedback on project progress.
CASCADE will further develop its pilot actions and focus on creating practical, scalable solutions for the circular carbon economy. Events like this are crucial in ensuring that the project’s work reaches the right audiences and provides impetus for broader adoption in North West Europe.
